President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed his plan to reward the rural islands whose whole population has quit smoking altogether.
In a post on X, the President stated that he has instructed the relevant ministers to compile a study on the merits of issuing a monetary allowance to each resident of the island whose entire population has quit smoking.
The President stated that this would involve depositing the money directly into the bank accounts of the residents and providing other allowances.
President Muizzu noted that this was part of the effort to make a healthy society free from tobacco use.
The administration of President Muizzu has been actively working to create a tobacco-free society, firstly by banning vaping in the Maldives.
Then the government introduced a general smoking ban, which prohibits those born on or after 2007 from purchasing, selling, and using tobacco products in the country.
