Parliament receives a motion seeking the views of the MPs on changing the overtime rules for those working in the education and health sectors.
The MP for Kanditheem Constituency, Ameen Faisal, submitted the motion.
The motion noted that Workers in the healthcare and education sectors are required to spend more time at work, although there are standards for overtime pay and overtime work.
He stated that, according to the overtime-related standard of the new State Pay Framework, the monthly overtime payment is limited to a maximum of 10 per cent of the basic salary of the post, and that it was prohibited by law to assign work that exceeded the overtime framework.
MP Ameen noted in the motion that there are not enough health workers in the health sector to serve the public, forcing many health workers to spend extra hours at work, and educators working long hours outside school hours.
He also added that any provision in a rule or employment contract that prevents employees from receiving guaranteed rights and benefits shall be void
