A London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 people has crashed shortly after take-off in Ahmedabad, western India

Flight AI171 was travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.

Air Indian said that there were 169 Indian nationals on the flight, as well as 53 Britons, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals on the flight when it crashed.

Media reports and local police have said that the plane crashed into an accommodation building used by doctors and students.

Local rescue workers are still working to put out the fire caused by the crash, with a casualty number still to be reported.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed profound sadness about the crash in Ahmedabad. In a post via X, President Muizzu said that at this difficult time, the government and people of the Maldives stand in solidarity with the people and hte government of India.
