The Parliament has approved the appointment of Justice Mohamed Saleem and Justice Abdullah Hameed to the Supreme Court.

Two places on the seven-judges bench of the Supreme Court were vacated after the Parliament removed Justices Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaaz Ali Zahir for misconduct.

When the Judicial Service Commission opened the application slots, 12 individuals applied for the vacancies, whom the Commission then interviewed.

The Commission recommended Justice Saleem and Justice Hameed to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

After the President forwarded their names to the parliament, the Judicial Services Commission of the Parliament wanted to further deliberate on the credentials before approving their names at the next Committee meeting.

Today, the whole house voted on their appointments, and 60 MPs voted in favour of Hameed's appointment to the Supreme Court while 61 MPs backed Justice Saleem for the country's top court.
