The family of the local religious scholar Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed has decided to hold his funeral in Malaysia, where he passed away last night.
Sheikh Fareed passed away suddenly shortly after arriving in Malaysia.
His family said that they tried to bring his body home to the Maldives, but since an autopsy must be done on the scholar's body, he would now be buried in Malaysia.
In a message to the media, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that funeral prayers for the scholar would be held in mosques across the Maldives in absentia next Friday, if he is buried before then.
It is noteworthy that Sheikh Farid has done a lot of work to spread religious knowledge and increase religious awareness in the Maldives.
