Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed interest in running in the next Presidential elections.
He expressed interest in a message he sent to close confidantes over competing in the 2028 Presidential Elections.
In the message, President Nasheed expressed his interest in participating in the presidential election and asked what they thought about it. He said the relationship between them would not be affected by their answer.
Nasheed was elected as President back in 2008 after he defeated then-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in a contest that brought to end to Maumoon's 30-year old regime.
However, in 2012 Nasheed resigned as President after a revolt against his government within the security forces following opposition protests.
In 2013, he was defeated in the Presidential election by former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom and in 2018 Nasheed was deemed inelibile to take part in the election due to terrorrims charges filed against him.
In 2023, he lost the MDP primary to then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and later left MDP to form a new party, called the Democrats.
