The Parliament has thrown out an emergency motion submitted regarding the massive power outage that affected major parts of the Greater Male' area yesterday.
Male', Hulhumale', and Hulhule' suffered a total blackout yesterday afternoon and it took authorities more than 6 hours to fully restore power. This prompted a police investigation into the events leading up to the power outage and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on authorities to ensure that such an incident does not repeat itself.
Today, the MP for Hulhumale' South Constituency Dr. Ahmed Shamheed submitted an emergency motion to the parliament stating that such a sudden and total blackout was uncommon in the Greater Male' area and this would affect healthcare services and equipment.
He also said that the outage affected local businesses and that the Velanaa International Airport was also brought to a standstill because of the blackout.
The motion stated that these issues need to be brought to the Government's attention.
However, when a vote was taken to decide whether or not the motion should be debated on, only 9 out 52 MPs present voted 'Yes' to accept the motion for debate.
The rest, 43 MPs, voted against accepting the motion and it was thrown out subsequently.
