Police have arrested a foreigner for allegedly smuggling and illegally selling cigarettes in the Maldives.
They said that the man was arrested after an operation by officers from Villimale' Police Station on the 23rd of this month.
They said that the officers had raided a boat docked at the Thilafushi Boat Yard, where they found 32 cartons of Manchester brand cigarettes smuggled into the country illegally.
Police also said that they arrested a 45-year-old Bangladeshi man named Abdul Kareem in connection with the case.
They said that the investigation has shown that the man has been working in the Maldives illegally. They added that the man has now been remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court.
Police are further investigating the case.
