Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has resigned from his post amid ongoing youth-led protests demanding his resignation.
Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed confirmed just moments ago that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has accepted the Commissioner's resignation.
Youth-led protests broke out in the capital Male' demanding social justice and an end to systematic corruption, days after a young woman was found on the roof of a building in the capital. Initial police reports said that the young woman had fallen from the 9th floor of the building. However, online social media activists questioned the police investigation and alleged that the police were hiding key pieces of evidence in their attempt to cover up for the higher-ups.
The online outrage poured onto the streets last Wednesday in the form of youth-led protests and is set to continue for the 4th consecutive night.
Protesters are demanding that authorities conduct a transparent investigation into the fall of the 21-year-old and bring all those responsible to justice. The protesters are also demanding that the former Commissioner of Police resign along with the Homeland Minister, Ali Ihusan, and Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen.
Ameen's house was searched on Thursday in the course of the investigation into what led the woman to fall on the roof in the early hours of 18th April.
Meanwhile, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan confirmed that Deputy Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikri has been appointed to temporarily assume the duties of Commissioner of Police in accordance with Section 58 (n) of Act No. 34/2020 (Dhvehi Police Service Act).
