A man in Kulhudhufushi has suffered serious injuries after a shark attacked him near Kulhudhufushi.
Reports said that the man had gone into the waters off Kulhudhufushi to catch fish when the shark attacked him. Sources close to the incident said that he had gone into the waters near the Dump site in the city.
The man has been identified as a 30-year-old. Islanders reported that the animal had bitten the man and attempted to drag the man deeper into the sea.
However, those who had gone to fish with him helped escape from the shark's jaws, sources said.
The man was then rushed to the hospital for treatment. Kulhudhufushi regional hospital said that the victim had suffered a dislocated shoulder and but that the victim was stable.
Local media have said that the hospital is making arrangements to transfer the victim to Male' for further treatment.
It is not clear what species of shark attacked the man, but in most cases, tiger sharks in Maldivian waters appear to attack humans.
Shark attacks have been increasing in the island-nation as the population of sharks has increased over the years in the country. Sharks are a protected animal in the Maldives.
