The Maldives has opened its first-ever resident embassy in the Republic of Türkiye
The embassy was inaugurated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, at a ceremony held this morning.
A flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Embassy to mark this occasion, led by Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy and Ambassador of Maldives to Türkiye, Lieutenant General (Retd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef.
The Ceremony was also attended by the Chairperson of the Maldives-Türkiye Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Honourable Dr. Ümmügülşhen Öztürk, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, members of the business community, Turkish media, staff of the Embassy, and the resident Maldivian community in Ankara.
The Foreign Ministry said that the establishment of a resident Diplomatic Mission in Türkiye marks a historical milestone in the bilateral relations between the Maldives and Türkiye.
The Embassy will contribute to implementing the Maldives’ foreign policy and assist with the provision of consular services to the growing Maldivian diaspora in Türkiye. The Embassy will also serve as a platform to explore new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr. Khaleel highlighted the importance of the establishment of the Embassy in Türkiye and expressed that it is a testament to the growing ties between the two nations. The Minister further stressed that the Embassy would play a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral cooperation, fostering economic growth, and promoting cultural and people-to-people ties.
In his remarks the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted the long standing friendly relations between the Republic of Türkiye and the Maldives based on mutual respect and sincerity. Minister Ersoy also noted the friendly relations have developed and deepened over the years in many areas from tourism to culture, from economy to education.
Foreign Minister Dr Khaleel is accompanied by Secretary Dr. Hala Hameed and Senior Under Secretary Hassan Hussain Shihab.
