The Criminal Court has remanded former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamman Waheed in custody till the end of his trial.

Shamman was arrested last month along with 4 other individuals in the extortion case involving several officers from Immigration.

Police said that the former Controller was taken to the Criminal Court today and that the Court sentenced that he be remanded in custody till the end of his trial.

The other officers who were arrested include 21-year-old Mohamed Alsan Ismail, 37-year-old Ibrahim Mohamed, 40-year-old Ahmed Lassan, and 47-year-old Hassan Saheshan.

Police had said that a preliminary investigation into the Immigration case revealed that Immigration officers who did not belong to the Immigration task force and risk management section had visited the labor quarters of migrants and searched these houses.

The Police statement said that the foreigners were taken into custody with a large amount of cash.

It noted that a foreigner was taken to the Immigration Detention Center with Rs 530,000 and released a day later on Shamran's orders. Police also shared that Immigration officers met with the foreigner who was released and went to the former Controller's house with the same amount of money.

Police continue to investigate the case.
