The Government has declared that Sunday, 30th of March, is Eid Al Fitr for this year.
This was confirmed by the Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed after the moon sighting committee met earlier this evening.
He said that said that the moon indicating the end of Ramadan and beginning of Shawaal has not been sighted in any part of the country.
However, he said that as the moon has been sighted in some Islamic countries, tomorrow is declared Eid Al Fitr in the Maldives.
The statement by the government followed news from Saudi Arabia that Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday. Saudi Officials said that the crescent moon that signals the beginning of Shawwal was sighted in the Sudair and Tumair Observatories.
However, several major countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Bangladesh would be celebrating Eid Al- Fitr on the 31st of March, Monday, as the crescent moon was not sighted in the countries.
