Police have arrested another individual in the extortion case involving several officers from Immigration and released the identities of all the suspects arrested in the case.
This means police have now arrested 5 individuals in this case including the former Controller General of Immigrations Mohamed Shamman Waheed.
The other officers who were arrested include 21-year-old Mohamed Alsan Ismail, 37-year-old Ibrahim Mohamed, 40-year-old Ahmed Lassan, and 47-year-old Hassan Saheshan.
Lassan was arrested last night while the other three were apprehended on the 20th of this month. The former Controller was arrested on the 21st of this month. Shamman has been remanded in custody for 15 days while 2 other officers have been remanded for 10 days.
Police had said that a preliminary investigation into the Immigration case revealed that Immigration officers who did not belong to the Immigration task force and risk management section had visited the labor quarters of migrants and searched these houses.
The Police statement said that the foreigners were taken into custody with a large amount of cash.
It noted that a foreigner was taken to the Immigration Detention Center with Rs 530,000 and released a day later on Shamran's orders. Police also shared that Immigration officers met with the foreigner who was released and went to the former Controller's house with the same amount of money.
Police continue to investigate the case.
