Police arrested former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamman Waheed last night amid serious allegations of abuse of power against several immigration officers.
Police said that Shamman was arrested under a court order.
A video on social media showed that he was escorted into a police vehicle by officers in plain clothes and taken to the police station in Galolhu.
Police shared last night that a preliminary investigation into the Immigration case revealed that Immigration officers who did not belong to the Immigration task force and risk management section had visited the labor quarters of migrants and searched these houses.
The Police statement said that the foreigners were taken into custody with a large amount of cash.
It noted that a foreigner was taken to the Immigration Detention Center with Rs 530,000 and released a day later on Shamran's orders. Police also shared that Immigration officers met with the foreigner who was released and went to the former Controller's house with the same amount of money.
Police said that five persons were stopped and searched under a court order and electronic equipment was seized.
