The Parliament has thrown out an emergency motion demanding that the government take immediate action to resolve the systematic blackouts in Addu City.
The MP for Hithadhoo South Constituency, Ibrahim Nazil, submitted the emergency motion. In the motion, he said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to resolve the electricity issue in Addu City. However, he said that the issue still keeps disrupting the lives of citizens of Addu City.
He said the city's residents are expressing concern over the repeated power cuts that are damaging expensive electrical appliances such as air conditioners and refrigerators in households, shops, and offices.
The MP said that the power cut issue is persisting because three generator sets of the city's main power plant need to be repaired and the FENAKA office in Male' is unable to send the spare parts required for the repair.
He also said that the main power plant said it needed two three-MW generators to solve the power outage in Addu, but only one 1.8-MW generator was taken.
The parliament accepted the motion and put it to a vote on whether or not it should be debated. Out of the 62 MPs who took part in the vote, only 13 voted in favour of the motion, while 47 MPs voted against it.
