Maldives Meteorological Services, the Met Office, says K. Dhiffushi's automatic weather station recorded 296mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.

The Met Office said that this was the highest daily accumulated rainfall record in the country.

It noted that the data was registered between 08:00 am on 1st March and 08:00 am on 2nd March.

The Met Office also shared the top five rainfall records, including the one set in Dhiffushi.

The 2nd record on the list was registered at Haa Alifu Kelaa on 12th August 2024 when it recorded 231mm of rainfall. The 3rd record on the list was collected from Male' back in 2018 with 228mm of rainfall.

The 4th record was set in Seenu Gan in 2015 with 228.4 mm of rainfall, while Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadedhdhoo set the 5th record with 219 mm of rainfall back in 2002.

The heavy rainfall across the country yesterday prompted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to declare today a public holiday.
