Police say they fined more than 10 people for vaping last month.
The law-mandated ban on vaping went into effect in the Maldives last December. The ban on vaping is being implemented as stipulated in the First Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act passed by the parliament on 12th November 2024.
The bill prohibits the import, sale, free distribution, and use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), vaping devices, and products designed for use with such devices in the Maldives.
Police said that 12 individuals were fined for vaping between 1st January and 31st January 2025 in 14 different cases. Police said the fines amounted to MVR 70,000.
Police also said that 17 individuals were fined in December 2024 after the ban came into effect on the 15th of that month. Police also confirmed that this amounted to MVR 130,500.
