Kulhudhuffushi City Council has prohibited residents and visitors from canoeing in the city's vast mangroves when the visiting flamingos are in the mangroves.
It said in a post via X that since the 2021 Iruvai monsoon (northeast monsoon season) the birds have been visiting the mangroves in the city.
The City Council said that these birds bring happiness and more life to the city and that it was the city's responsibility to provide a safe and comfortable environment for such seasonal birds.
It said that many residents have been complaining to the council that some individuals are going too close to the birds and canoeing in the mangroves.
The Kulhudhuffushi Council went on to ban canoeing in the mangrove while the birds were resting in the area. It also advised drone operators not to disturb the birds.
The Council asked residents to call it via 7328831 to report canoeing and any other actions that might disturb the birds.
