Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah says comments made by MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail about President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and former President Mohamed Ameen Didi incited terrorism.
During a press briefing on Monday, Fayyaz said that when the President becomes tyrannical, the people of the Maldives will act as per history, and President Muizzu may meet the fate of the country's first President Ameen.
In 1953, with the support of the people, Ameen Didi abolished the 812-year-old sultanate and became the first President of the Maldives. But the revolution and Ameen's government were shortlived as the Sultanate was resorted the following year and an angry mob in Male brutally beat President Ameen'. He was then exiled to Kaafu Gaafaru and died later that year.
In a post on X, the Speaker of the Parliament said that Fayyaz's comments were definitely encouraging terrorism. He also said that relevant authorities should take the MDP Chairperson's remarks seriously.
PNC MPS submitted an emergency motion to the Parliament today to further condemn the comments by Fayyaz and called for his immediate arrest.
