MP for Galolhu South Constituency Meekail Naseem has voiced concern over the ruling party PNC's reluctance to disclose the details of the 2024 budget details to the public.

This comes after PNC MPs on the parliament budget Committee along with the MP for Maamgili Constituency Qasim Ibrahim voted against disclosing the details of the 2024 expenditures at the Committee's first meeting today.

Earlier, the MP for Hanimaadhoo Constituency submitted a motion calling on the government to disclose its spending. However, the motion was thrown out after the decisions from PNC MPs and MP Qasim.

Posting on X, MP Meekail stated that PNC is refusing to disclose 2024 budget expenditure details to the public while also asking the people’s representatives for an additional 5 billion supplementary budget.

He added that this would be funny if it weren’t so extremely dangerous.

The government proposed the MVR 5.1 billion budget at last Thursday's Parliamentary session.

Finance Minister Mossa Zameer said the budget would be financed through project loans, loans from locals, and the sale of T-bills.

He detailed that the budget would be financed by taking loans worth MVR 1 billion from foreign lenders and MVR 3 billion from local lenders.

Zameer said the supplementary budget will receive MVR 34 billion in revenue and grants. He also said that the total deficit of the supplementary budget is MVR 4 billion, adding that this year's budget deficit will increase to MVR 18 billion.
