The Parliament Committee on Foreign Relations has backed the appointment of Aishath Azima as the next Maldivian Ambassador to India.
Azima is currently the Additional Secretary at the Foreign Ministry.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu recommended Azima's name for the Indian Ambassador post yesterday. The Parliament requested the Foreign Relations Committee to begin the vetting process.
At today's Committee meeting, the MP for Maafannu South Constituency Abdullah Rifau proposed to interview Azima before the appointment. But the MP for Kulhudhufushi South member counter-proposed the committee to approve the appointment without interviewing her as Azim's resume was already impressive.
This made MP Rifaw withdraw his earlier submission and the 8 MPs who took part in the committee meeting voted in favor of appointing Azima as the next Maldivian Ambassador to India.
Azima served as the Chinese ambassador from August 2019 to September last year. She is currently working in India, as Head of the India Desk.
The government proposed Azima's name as the term of the current Ambassador Ibrahim Shaheeb expires.
