The Criminal Court says it will continue the hearings on the Vaavu Aarah case against former President Abdulla Yameen once the Supreme Court rules on its case on the same issue on its docket.
In December 2022, the Criminal Court convicted the former President of bribery and money laundering in the lease of Aarah giving him a total jail sentence of 11 years.
However, in April this year, the High Court overruled the Criminal Court's ruling and ordered it to retry the case.
The State had filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, contesting part of the High Court's ruling.
At the hearing held in the Criminal Court today, the lawyers of the former President asked the Criminal Court to stay the proceedings until the case is resolved in the Supreme Court.
The Defence also requested the court to provide CDs containing recordings of President Yameen's statement to the investigation.
Judge Ali Nadeem decided to adjourn the trial as the new evidence presented in the Criminal Court case would affect the case in the Supreme Court. The CDs requested by President Yameen will also be given to him.
