Local authorities have successfully intercepted a significant amount of cannabis smuggled into the country through Velana International Airport.
At a press conference held today, Police reported that on July 27, 2023, at approximately 07:40 hours, officers conducting routine checks discovered over 15 kilograms of cannabis in the luggage of a 44-year-old Malaysian national who arrived on flight EK656.
Superintendent of Police Mohamed Afzal reported that the seized cannabis has an estimated street value of 12.3 million Maldivian rufiyaa. Initial tests confirmed the substance to be cannabis.
He said that following the discovery, Police Drug Enforcement officers initiated a controlled delivery operation. He further said that this operation led to the arrest of an additional suspect, a 41-year-old Malaysian male, on the night of July 28.
Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Waheed stated that both suspects have been remanded in custody for five days by order of the Criminal Court. The investigation has revealed potential links to individuals from four different countries, indicating an international drug trafficking network.
This operation marks the largest single seizure of cannabis in the Maldives this year, demonstrating the effectiveness of our ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.
The Maldives Police Service remains vigilant in its fight against drug-related crimes and continues to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of our nation.
