Maldives Customs Services have said that it has seized more than 64 kgs of drugs so far this year.

At a press conference held today, Customs said that it has seized a total of 64.84 kg of drugs this year and that the street value of the seized drugs reaches MVR 106،358،952 ( MVR one hundred six million three hundred fifty-eight thousand nine hundred fifty-two).

According to customs statistics, cannabis was the most seized item this year.

It said that 17.38 kg of cannabis has been seized this year and that 11.60 kg of heroin has also been seized in 5 different cases. Customs added that 15.64 kg of cocaine has also been seized in different cases this year.

Police are conducting special operations to solve drug cases. On the 27th of this month, two locals and a foreigner were arrested for smuggling drugs worth MVR 2 million.

Customs said that the foreigner was a Pakistani national and all three have now been remanded in custody for 15 days.
