The Parliament has passed a recommendation in which it has advised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to dismiss the Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority MMA Ali Hashim.

At today's session, the report recommending Hashim's dismissal to the President compiled by the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee was put to a vote.

A total of 72 MPs took part in the vote and 63 voted in favour of recommending the Governor's dismissal while 9 voted against the recommendation.

The Parliament's Public Account passed the recommendation against Hashim last Wednesday. It was submitted to the Committee by the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament MP for Dhigaru Constituency Ahmed Nazim.

MP Nazim said that with the current economic situation, the government is earning money from the domestic market, but it is not doing anything to regulate the market.

He added that MMA's regulations are not up to date which in turn cannot prevent certain financial crimes. The motion was then put to a vote and subsequently passed by the committee.

While the Governor himself did not appear before the Committee after being summoned several times, in his written response to the Committee, Hashim said that the country's current economic situation is because the authorities have failed to heed the warnings issued by MMA and global financial institutions.
