State Electric Company Ltd Stelco says a man who tried to steal from one of its transformer boxes in Hulhumale' Phase 2 has died after being electrocuted.
The Managing Director of Stelco, Hussain Fahmy, said in a post that a man who had tried to steal from a transformer box had been electrocuted.
The Police later confirmed this. Police said that officers on patrol near the Hiya Flats in Hulhumale' spotted a man who had collapsed near the Stelco transformer near H3 Tower.
Police said that the man was found around 04:00 am and that the man was rushed to the hospital from the scene. They confirmed that the person was declared dead on arrival at the hospital and that Police were further investigating the incident.
While stealing from Stelco transformers has become common recently, last Friday night, Fahmy posted that he had reported the matter to the authorities after noticing that the locks of Stelco substations were being destroyed, the transformers were being broken into, and various parts were being stolen.
He also said that the power outage in Hulhumale' on Thursday and Friday was also due to the theft from some transformer boxes.
