The government has contracted with a Chinese company to maintain the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge under free assistance from China.

The agreement involves developing facilities and providing technical assistance to maintain the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.

Under the agreement, the Chinese company is obligated to;

  • Carryout initial repairs
  • Carry out preventive maintenance works
  • Make assessments for bridge maintenance scope
  • Bridge maintenance
  • Create record keeping system
  • Make damage assessments of bridge components and maintenance

The maintenance work was contracted to the existing Chinese contractor, CCCC company, for three years. The agreement also includes building the capacity of Maldivian technicians to carry out maintenance works.

The Ministry of Construction said that the team would be able to take over the bridge maintenance work under the supervision of the team.

Maldivians would be trained in Bridge and Road Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Traffic Safety, Facility landscaping, and Bridge maintenance.
