President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared Sunday, April 21, 2024, and Monday, April 22, 2024, public holidays for two days, considering the voting process for the Parliamentary Elections 2024.
The President's Office said that the President declared the two days public holidays, as Sunday, April 21, is the polling day for the Parliamentary Elections 2024.
It also said that the Election Commission of the Maldives (ECM) requested that the polling day be declared a public holiday due to the significant involvement of Government employees and the general public in various election-related activities.
The President's Office clarified that the ECM also requested that Monday, April 22, be a public holiday due to numerous significant tasks such as vote counting, result announcements, and other election-related activities.
The Commission was forced to postpone the elections after the parliament approved an amendment to the Elections Act, which stated that future elections cannot be held during Ramadan. The Commission only announced the new election date after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the bill.
