Male' City Mayor Adam Azim says City Council staff threw out 42.5 tons of waste from Male' yesterday alone.
The capital city has been undergoing a mega cleanup in the last few days after residents gathered their collective waste on the streets of Male' City after cleaning up their households for the holy month of Ramadan. This led to piles of rubbish and waste seen on almost all the street corners with old furniture, toilet seats, and construction waste also among the collected garbage.
The City Council has deployed staff across the City to rid the capital of the waste and the Mayor confirmed that his staff has collected 305.6 tons of waste in 18 days.
He said that this amounts to 25 ft-sized 12.22 containers. The Mayor implored the residents not to throw out waste on the streets and to work together to make the city a pleasant place to live.
The City Council picked up waste from different areas yesterday including Janavaree Magu in Henveriu ward as well as different alley across the congested Male'.
The Council has also started to take action against those who throw waste at public places and have since fined 100 individuals for violating the rules.
