Fisheries Ministry Ahmed Shiyam says he is traveling to Gaafu Alifu Kooddoo where fishermen are staging a protest over unpaid dues by the government.
During today's protests, the fishermen have been saying that the government's inability to pay them their unpaid dues has left them and their families with financial burdens.
Speaking about the protest, Minister Shiyam said that the matter was of the highest priority to the government and that the administration is working tirelessly to resolve the issue.
He welcomed the peaceful protests which he labeled as the cornerstone of how rights are secured in a democratic community.
The Minister said that many fishermen who are not taking part in the protest have appealed that the operations at the fish weighing center continue without halt and requested those protesting to be mindful of it.
Shiyam said that the current government is working to pay back the remaining MVR 280 million before the 5th of next month.
