The Parliament is set to question Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon in a bid to clarify whether Indian troops stormed local fishing vessels within Maldivian waters or not and to seek details about the incidents.
The request to summon the Defense Minister was made by the MP for Henveiru Hulhangu Constituency Hassan Latheef. In his questions, the MP requested the Minister to clarify whether the government has been able to confirm whether Indian troops stormed the vessels inside Maldivian waters.
The MP also sought clarification on how the events unfolded and the measures the government has taken to prevent the repeat of such an incident.
This comes a few days after the Indian Naval/Coast Guard boarded a Maldivian vessel off Thuraakunu in the north and the Defense Ministry has since said that Indian troops stormed a total of 3 vessels in the area.
The Ministry said that the vessels were stormed while within the Maldivian Special Economic Zone and that the Indian navy carried out its operation without coordination with its Maldivian counterparts and against International maritime law.
