The main opposition party MDP is holding its primary to elect candidates that will represent the party in the upcoming Parliamentary election.
Voting in the primary began at 09:00 a.m today and will continue till 05:00 p.m in the evening.
Today's primary will secure the party ticket to candidates aiming to compete in the election for 40 constituencies of the parliament. A total of 148 candidates from the party are vying for party tickets in today's primary.
MDP has said that 25,325 people are eligible to take part in the primary.
A total of 47 individuals have secured the party tickets for the Parliamentary election without the need to compete in the primary. These include members of the party leadership as well as sitting parliament members.
Elections Commission is set to hold the Parliamentary Election on the 17th of March which is also the 6th day of Ramadan. This has caused many to raise concerns and MDP has submitted an amendment to the Elections Act barring the electoral watchdog from holding any elections during the month of Ramdan.
