Police say a youth has died in a drowning incident reported from the Southern City of Fuvahmulah.

They identified the victim of the incident as a 23-year-old local man.

Police said that they received the report of the drowning incident around 07:30 a.m. and that the man had been rushed to Fuvamulah Hospital.

They cited the hospital to report that the victim was declared dead on arrival.

Police did not reveal any other information about the incident but said that they were further investigating the incident.

Drowning incidents are common in the Maldives while over the year many have perished during solo and group diving incursions as well as for fishing.

Recently, an 18-year-old from Addu City went missing after he and three of his friends went free diving to catch fish in Addu City. Authorities are yet to find his body.
