Male' City Council has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare to build a temporary cat shelter in Hulhumale' within 6 months.
At the ceremony held today, Mayor Adam Azim signed on behalf of the Council while State Minister Hussain Ismail signed on behalf of the government.
A 5,000 square feet land plot has been allocated from Hulhumale' for the cat shelter. The government and the City Council plan to move all the cats roaming the streets of Male' to the shelter once it is completed and facilitate the treatments for the felines.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Adam said that the Council had done tremendous work to facilitate the shelter and that the fact that the government allocated the land for the project shows its willingness to cooperate on the matter.
Azim said that authorities estimate that there are around 3,000 cats now roaming Male' and said that if the issue is left unattended the number could multiply up to 9,000 by the end of this year.
The Government announced earlier this week that it would establish a pet care facility on Farukolhu Fushi and how now signed agreements on the project.
