The 1,200-metre new runway at Hanimadhoo International Airport will be opened on Sunday, the Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) said.
RACL said the runway lights are currently being installed at 1,200 meters of the first opening of the airport. In addition, the runway will be opened on Sunday and flight operations will continue day and night.p
The new runway at Hanimaadhoo International Airport is 2,460 meters long. RCL said the entire runway (2,460 metres) will be completed by the second quarter of this year and will be open for 24-hour use.
The new 2,460-metre runway will provide a terminal with a capacity of 1.3 million passengers annually. The project will also provide other facilities to expand international flights.
Once the runway is completed, the airport will be able to serve Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft for international flights.
The Hanimaadhoo International Airport project was launched in January last year. It is a loan from Exim Bank of India.
