The Prosecutor General's Office has withdrawn its appeal at the High Court after the Criminal Court cleared former Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Baqir and former ministry official Ibrahim Abdullah Saeed of corruption charges.

The Criminal Court's ruling in favor of the duo came in November of 2021.

The PG Office appealed the ruling at the High Cout but the Court said yesterday that upon review of the appeal case by the PGO, it was decided not to go forward with the case.

It said that the PGO had requested the High Court to cancel the appeal form via a letter and that the High Court bench presiding the case decided to facilitate the request.

In 2020, the PGO filed charges on behalf of the state against former Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Ziyaad for alleged corruption in the construction of Zikuraa Mosques in Male’ City.

PGO said that it filed the charges against the former minister after it was revealed that the agreement for the construction of a 10-story mosque was made in violation of the proposal submitted by SJ Construction and in a way that incurred a loss to the state. It also said upon the signing of the agreement, SJ Construction was paid MVR 30 million in equity, and no gains were made to the state.
