MDP's Adam Azim has been elected as the Mayor of Male' City with a commanding victory in the by-election held today.
Preliminary results show that Azim has won 6,262 votes so far which means that he has now received 45.2 percent of the votes. The candidate from the ruling PNC/PPM Aishath Azim Shakoor is competing the closest with 4,070 votes which takes her voter percentage to 29.39 percent.
The Candidate from the Democrats Mohamed Saif Fathih received 14.12 percent while Independent Candidates Hussain Waheed and Shuabi Ali received 10 percent and 0.68 percent respectively.
Voting was held from 08:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. today across the Male' City with over 56,000 eligible voters.
The Elections Commission said that all the ballot boxes have now been closed and that ballot counting was now underway. The Commission had said that voter turnout is expected to be around 30 percent. Back in 2020, around 40 percent of the eligible voters came out to cast their votes in the local council election.
