Local media has reported that the Foreign Ministry has summoned the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Munu Mahawar over the escalating tension between the two countries following comments made by top Maldivian officials against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Media reports say that the Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian High Commissioner for a meeting at noon today. This comes after the Indian External Affairs Ministry summoned Maldivian High Commissioner to India Ibrahim Shihab earlier today.

Details of the High Commissioner's meeting have not been revealed but the Indian government is expected to demand more action against those who made the callous comments against its Prime Minister.

The Maldivian government issued a timid statement acknowledging the derogatory comments against Modi and India by officials holding deputy Minister titles in the new government.

The government also said that the opinions were their own opinion and did not reflect the view of the Maldivian government.

Subsequently, the Maldivian government has said that it had suspended the officials who made the comments on social media but did not reveal the details of their punishment.

Many on social media are calling on the government to take affirmative action and fire those officials from their posts.
