The President's Office has announced that the academic year in 2026 will begin in January of that year.
Reverting the academic year as per the calendar year is a huge Presidential Pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after the previous administration changed the beginning of the academic year to the middle of the year back in 2021.
At a press briefing held at the President's Office just now, Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said that students would enjoy their academic year-end holiday of 2025 in December and that they would begin their new Academic year in January of 2026.
Nazim said that the cabinet has decided to implement this change following a paper by the Education Ministry and that the government aims to make it a smooth transition and not make it difficult for the students as well as the parents.
Nazim further said that the Education Ministry itself would later announce the changes to the new academic year and how it would affect school holidays and students who would be taking International Exams.
The confirmation of the change to the Academic Calendar comes amid speculation that the Ministry is looking to shorten this academic year to facilitate starting the academic year from the beginning of the calendar year starting 2025.
