Government employees have observed a minute of silence this morning to mark the unity displayed by Maldivians during the 2004 tsunami. The minute of silence was observed at 9:23 am, the recorded time the Tsunami hit the Maldives in 2004.

Employees from different government agencies and ministries stepped out of their offices onto the streets to observe the minute of silence.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials, and President's Office staff in the grass field south of the President's Office, the site of the former Huravee Building.

In the Maldives, December 26th, the anniversary of the 2004 tsunami that caused the loss of many lives and widespread damage and destruction in the Maldives, is marked as National Unity Day. President Dr Muizzu had previously stated via a social media post that Maldivians had chosen unity over every devastating circumstance the country faced.

The President and the First Lady will attend the official function to mark National Unity Day at Dharubaaruge this evening.
