The Parliament says it has filed a report at the police over the death threats given to the MP for Ihavandhoo Constituency Mohamed Shifau.

The Parliament said that it strongly condemned giving death threats to the MP. It said that it had filed a report at the police urging them to investigate the threats given to MP Shifau via social media platforms.

The Parliament also said that it had requested the Defense Ministry to ensure the security and safety of the MP.

MDP, to which MP Shifau belongs, also condemned the death threats given to him. MDP urged the police to investigate the threats against him. MDP further said that the most dignifying responsibility of an opposing party is to make the acting government accountable for its action and it is highly concerning that a member of the Parliament comes under such threats while fulfilling his constitutional responsibility.

The death threats against MP Shifau followed his announcement that he would submit the impeachment of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the MDP Parliamentary Group.

Speaking at the Parliamentary session yesterday, MP Shifau said that the people of the Maldives do not want President Muizzu to stay in power for even 24 hours.

He said that the most important work the 19th Parliament must do is to impeach the President and that he would submit the matter to the MDP PG.
