Police say the man who attacked his mother in a flat in Hulhumale' Phase I suffers from a mental illness.
They said that the man is now under treatment for the illness. Local media reported that the man was undergoing treatment at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital IGMH under the supervision of the Ministry of Social and Family Development.
Police said last night that the man had attacked his mother, 51, during a domestic dispute.
They said that the woman had suffered serious injuries during the attack and that she was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
The man has been identified as a 25-year-old local.
Police have said that they were further investigating the matter.
Domestic disputes and domestic violence cases are frequent in the Maldives. Police said this month that in the 3rd quarter of this year, 46 domestic violence cases were investigated.
Police said that this includes 15 cases that include family members and 31 cases that include spouses.
