MP for Ihavandhoo Constituency Mohamed Shifau says he would submit the impeachment of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the Parliamentary Group of Maldives Democratic Party MDP.
This comes after the Parliament passed an amendment that would require only the votes of MDP MPs of the 19th Parliament to impeach President Muizzu and Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
Speaking at today's Parliamentary session, MP Shifau said that the people of the Maldives do not want President Muizzu to stay in power for even 24 hours.
He said that the most important work the 19th Parliament must do is to impeach the President and that he would submit the matter to the MDP PG.
The threat of impeachment follows the amendment to Chapter 41 of the Parliament Standing Order passed by the Parliament General Committee.
The Amendment submitted by the Minority Leader of the Parliament Ali Azim states that a resolution looking to impeach the President or Vice President must be backed with a legitimate reason and the signatures of one-third of the Parliament.
The Parliament is yet to vote on this amendment. Currently MDP holds the super majority in the Parliament.
