Maldives Democratic Party MDP has opened applications for its members who are interested in competing in the party's primary to select the candidates for the upcoming Parliamentary election.
At a press conference today, Vice Chairperson of MDP Ibrahim Waheed said that the application would be open from today until the 25th of this month.
He outlined that only members of MDP can compete in the Primary and the candidates must fulfill all the conditions outlined in Article 73 of the Constitution as well as Article 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
Waheed said that the party has planned to hold its primaries for the required areas on the 26th and 27th of next month and that this was arranged this way as it would not be administratively possible to hold all the primaries in one day.
He said that only MDP members who have submitted their application form until today can compete in the primary.
The MDP Vice Chairperson noted that there is one difference to this primary from the previous one and this time around the party is asking potential candidates to submit their criminal records along with their application forms.
He added that the application forms are now available on the party website and the criminal record application forms are also available.
