Authorities in the Maldives have seized the passport of the President of the Football Association of the Maldives FAM Bassam Adeel Jaleel amid a corruption probe into the association.

The Press has come to know that his passport was seized today and that he has been banned from traveling abroad. No agency has yet confirmed this development.

Recently, Police and officers from the Prosecutor General's Office conducted a raid on the main office of the FAM to gather evidence related to corruption allegations against the football association.

Last week, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem said in a press conference that the main suspect of the allegations was Bassam and that other officials within FAM have also been accused of corruption.

Shameem said that allegations concerned funds issued by the world football governing body FIFA in violation of the public finance laws in the country. He further said that evidence shows that these funds have been used in different ways and that the investigation has collected evidence to take the matter to the Court.
