MDP Parliamentary Group has asked the party to take action against party MPs Abdullah Jabir and Hassan Shiyan for going against the party whip concerning the vote to elect a Deputy Speaker of the Parliament.

In a message to the media, MDP PG Spokesperson MP for Velidhoo Constituency Mohamed Abdullah Shafeeq said that MDP issued a three-line whip to vote for the MP for the Hoarafushi Constituency Ahmed Saleem as the Deputy Speaker.

He also said that MDP PG Leader MP for Alifushi Constituency Mohamed Rasheed Hussain has stated the PG group will submit the insubordination to the party's disciplinary committee.

Two MPs competed for the vacant Deputy Speaker post at the Parliamentary session held last night. One of the MPs was MP for Hoarafushi Constituency Ahmed Saleem whose name was nominated by MDP after a secret vote within the party yesterday.

He defeated MPs Jabir and Rozaina Adam who also sought the party's backing.

During last night's session, Jabir put forth his name for the Deputy Speaker post and went against the party's whip for the vote. His decision was seconded by fellow MDP MP Shiyan.

MP Saleem was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament with 51 votes from his fellow MPs. MP Jabir received 23 votes from the MPs present at the session.
