President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated on Sunday that renewable energy will shape the future of the Maldives under the leadership of the current government, and expressed 100% certainty in its accomplishment.
He made this statement during a media briefing at Velana International Airport upon his return from official visits to the Republic of Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The President emphasized the necessity of transitioning to a sustainable energy system for attaining sustainable development. He also highlighted that spending $750 million annually on energy from the national budget was not a preferable trajectory.
He shed light on two important decisions of this government that were announced at the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
Specifically, he addressed the Maldivian government's commitment to developing renewable energy systems capable of providing 33 percent of the nation's electrical needs within the next five years, and the announcement of a national drive to plant five million trees across the Maldives, reinforcing the Maldives' vision to become a nation centered on sustainable energy with a green and clean atmosphere.
President Muizzu expressed optimism regarding the administration's success in attracting foreign investments to the Maldives through various meetings held during his visit to Türkiye.
He underscored that the benefits of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) are open to all parties, highlighting the government's commitment to providing opportunities, especially in the sectors of sustainable energy and climate adaptation investments.
