The Parliament Committee on Member’s Privileges and Ethics has voted that MP for Vilifushi Constituency Hassan Afeef and the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah have violated the privileges of other Parliamentarians with their decisions at the parliament today.

This comes after the Parliament twice rejected the resolution submitted by MDP against the Speaker. MP for Vilifushi Constituency Hassan Afeef initially rejected the resolution at the first session held today and the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Eva Abdullah supported his decision at the second session held today.

The matter was then submitted to the Parliament Committee on Member's Privileges and Ethics by MDP.

In the statement sent to the Committee, MDP PG Leader MP Mohamed Aslam said the Chair of the session does not have the power to throw out resolutions submitted to the Parliament before the Floor decides on the document. He further pointed out that MP Afeef concluded the session wrongly and that he had violated the privileges of other MPs when he did it.

The Member's Privileges and Ethics Committee decided on two matters at its hastily scheduled meeting today. It decided that MP Afeef along with MP Eva violated the other MPs. It also decided to forward the recommendation to the General Purpose Committee to make sure that MP Afeef and MP Eva or no other MPs from the Democrats are assigned to chair the session that would oversee the removal of the Speaker.

The General Purpose Committee convened today to fast-track its decision on the matter.
