Transitional Spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul Abdullah Khaleel says UAE has given assurances that it would grant the MVR 1.2 billion needed to finish the Velanaa International Airport development project.

Speaking at a press conference today, Firuzul said that as promised before President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is working to complete the project by peak season next year and that the President-elect traveled to UAE to hold talks with the country's officials.

Firuzul said that the UAE heeded the President-elect's call to help finish the project by promising to grant USD 80 million (MVR 1.5 billion) under the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).

Noting that design changes and other delays have increased the cost of the project, Firuzul said that a total of USD 79.80 would be required to complete the project. He added that the government would now be able to complete the project with aid from the UAE.

Firuzul said that the incoming government is determined to finish VIA ahead of next year's peak season and further said that the President-elect would inspect the site before his swearing-in ceremony.

The Transitional Spokesperson further said that the UAE gave full reassurances to the President-elect that it would offer assistance if the Maldives required budget support or financial assistance to finish economic and social projects in the country.
